Common Sealing Questions & Answers

Q: I just installed a new seal and it leaks! What's wrong?
A: The first few hours of operation is called the "bedding-in" period. This is not only necessary for the meniscus to form, but also for the sealing edge to flatten. During this period of time leakage is likely.

Q: I have installed the seal but once I start my unit it walks out of the bore. What's wrong?
A: One of two problems. Pressure! Our standard seals only handle 5-7 PSI. If your unit is exerting more then the maximum pressure allowed it will blow the seal. A MSO ADL-P type seal which handles up to 140 PSI (10 bar) is your solution. Bore Tolerance can be another problem. Our seals are press-fit into your housing. If your housing is worn or out of tolerance, the seal will not achieve proper press-fit, thus having a loose fit, This will allow the seal to walk out of your housing.

Q: I am not achieving the seal life I desire. What's Wrong?
A: Many factors can attribute to this problem. Listed below are some of the situations you should look into.
1. Chemical compatibility - Is the chemical you are sealing compatible with the chosen sealing elastomer?
2. Temperature - Is the operating temperature within the limits of the chosen elastomer?
3. Shaft finish - Our seals operate with a minimum shaft hardness of 45 HRC. The shaft finish should be in the range of Rt = 1-4um (Ra = 0.20 - 0.80um) in the area of the contact surface, rifling marks are not permitted.
4. Shaft speed - Displayed in our Tolerance page is a graph displaying shaft diameters and gives recommended maximum RPM and surface speed.
5. Lubrication & Friction - Adequate lubrication of the sealing lips assures good seal life. Poor lubrication creates more friction and heat. This combination will make any seal fail prematurely. PTFE seals are the only type of seal we sell that will run in dry applications.

The SealPro 450 Seal Machine has an A2-6 spindle with 2.05" (52 mm) through draw tube capacity and a maximum spindle speed of 5,000 rpm. Rotation time for the bidirectional 12-station VDI-30 turret is .78 second (unclamp/index/clamp) to an adjacent station. Farthest station index time is only 1.0 second. Seal Machine SealPro 558

The SealPro 585 CNC Lathe offers an exceptional combination of standard features in a rugged, affordable compact machine. This CNC designed and manufactured machine is intended for speed, power, accuracy, and durability over competitive machines in its class for the highest possible return on investment.

This machine features a 25-hp (18.51-kW) spindle drive (with Fanuc Control) and includes a 3-jaw manual chuck as standard equipment. The SealPro 585 Seal Machine has an A2-8 spindle with 2.057" (52mm) through draw tube capacity and a maximum spindle speed of 4,200 rpm.

Heavy-duty linear guideways are used for X- and Z-axis motions, providing added stiffness, damping, and surface contact area to ensure a very stiff and durable machine. Rapid traverse rates for the X and Z axes are an impressive 1,181 ipm (30 mpm). Maximum X-axis travel is 10.70" (271.5mm), and maximum Z-axis travel is 23.62" (600mm).

The strategically-ribbed 45-degree slant bed machine base provides superior rigidity and durability. All structural components and castings are qualified by Finite Element Analysis (FEA)- a proven, highly-technical procedure that ensures a stiff, structurally-sound machine tool design.
