O-Rings and Back-up Rings

O-Rings and Back-up Rings

Back-up ring

Back-up rings are commonly used in conjunction with o-rings. The purpose of back-up rings is to prevent extrusion of the o-ring or seal under higher pressure.

Need your o-rings fast? MSO Seals is capable of manufacturing any o-ring up to 2 meters in diameter including Nitrile (NBR) 70, Nitrile (NBR) 90, HNBR, Silicone, EPDM, Viton®, Aflas, Teflon®, polyurethane, and more. We can produce o-rings in any size - standard, metric, or machined to your custom specifications. Request your free proposal on all o-rings and back-up rings.

Vee Packings reinforced with fabric are recommended for liquid and gas service on all heavy duty equipment where homogeneous packings will not withstand standard operating pressures and clearances. Fabric-reinforced Vee Packings are usually constructed of cotton duck fabric or asbestos cloth, which is then coated with various elastomers.

Seal and Ring Failure Analysis

O-RingsPrevention of o-ring seal failure first comes through proper design, material selection, and maintenace. Careful attention should be paid to the condition of replaced seals. Watching equipment performance over time will result in improved process reliability, reduced operating costs, and a safer work environment.

Extrusion is a common sealing problem that results from excessive clearances or pressure. One solution is to place a back-up ring on the low-pressure side of the seal.

O-ring seals often fail prematurely because of poor design or improper compound selection. An o-ring seal can fail from leaking, contamination, or change in appearance. Contact MSO Seals for a free consultation if you need help resolving an o-ring seal failure.
